Tooting & Mitcham v Hastings United - 5th May 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at Imperial Fields, Morden where today Hastings United visit Tooting and Mitcham”

After a battling win, against all the odds, at Dover on Tuesday night Hastings face the ultimate test at Tooting and Mitcham this afternoon in the Ryman League play off final. Tuesday’s victory was achieved with only ten men for much of the game, following Sam Adam’s dismissal for two yellow cards. A brace from Ade Olorunda sent the travelling fans home happy and has set up today’s fixture which has attracted enormous local interest. The winners will win promotion to the Ryman Premier Division, with the option of extra time and then penalties to ensure an outcome this afternoon.

Tooting finished in second place at the end of the campaign and traditionalists might argue that the rules should have rewarded them with an automatic promotion spot. They have gone thirty one games without defeat and edged past Fleet Town ion the other semi final with two very late goals. To add to the interest they include former Hastings goalkeeper Dave King in their line up and have former Hastings manager George Wakeling in their management team.

Manager Nigel Kane is without the services of suspended Sam Adams for this critical game and it is expected that Danny Ellis will provide a straight replacement in the starting line up.

Hastings had strong vocal support on Tuesday night at Dover and indications are that even more supporters will be making the trip this afternoon in the quest for victory.

Dover Athletic v Hastings United - Tuesday 1st May 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Crabble, Dover where today Hastings United visit Dover Athletic”

At the end of a gruelling forty two match league season just one point separates third placed Dover from fourth placed Hastings, but that slender margin is sufficient to give the Kent side crucial home advantage in the play off semi final tonight. The winners of this evening’s encounter will play either Tooting and Mitcham or Fleet Town on Saturday for a place in the Ryman Premier Division. Whatever happens there will be a clear winner tonight with extra time and penalties ensuring this.

Dover have won their last five consecutive matches, a record that has seen them power up the table at the right time, whilst Hastings have stuttered in recent weeks. This coincided with the loss of key players through suspension, but United returned to winning ways on Saturday with a comfortable win by four goals at Godalming Town. It saw a return to form for wide man Lee Carey, with two fine goals and Ade Olorunda registered with a goal before hobbling off with an ankle injury. Supporters hope that both Ade and Sam Adams, who was rested for precautionary reasons on Saturday due to a hamstring problem, will both be fit to start tonight’s match.

It was just three weeks ago that Hastings were at Crabble and were shell shocked in a torrid first half when they conceded two goals from set play. On both occasions Dover’s strength in the air lead to them scoring. Whilst Hastings clawed a goal back in the second half they always looked second best and the Kent club must start with a psychological advantage as a result .Sean Ray was absent that day and it is possible that had he played, defensive frailties may well have been plugged.

Both sides have attracted healthy support this evening for a match which will determine if Hastings battling season will yield a tangible reward. Join me on 107.8 Arrow FM for live updates during this crucial game this evening.

Godalming Town v Hastings United - Saturday 28th April 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at Weycourt where today Hastings United visit Godalming Town”

Without a win in three matches, Hastings United conclude their league programme with a trip to relegated  Godalming Town in the knowledge that their recent dip in form has seen an end to championship aspirations. With just one point out of nine, they have slipped from second to fifth place but have at least ensured a play off match next week.

The second placed club will host the fifth placed, with third spot entertaining the fourth side, so today is important in determining their midweek opponents and match venue. United will look to win today and hope that both Dover and Fleet Town slip up, enabling them to finish as high as third place, which would give home advantage in the critical play off match.

Hastings beat Godalming Town by a single goal at the Pilot Field in December and will be looking to record a double over their opponents.

Hastings have sorely missed both Sean Ray and Ade Olorunda who have been concluding suspensions, and there can be little doubt that this has been a contributory factor in the recent dip in form. Last Saturday, Hastings stuttered to a goal less draw against Corinthian Casuals, another side that is destined for relegation, and crowned goalkeeper Lee Worgan as player of the year. Striker Sam Adams was acclaimed as having scored goal of the season. A fitting tribute would be for Worgan to keep a clean sheet this afternoon and for Adams to find himself amongst the scorers as play off opponents are confirmed.

Hastings United v Corinthian Casuals - Saturday 21st April 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Corinthian Casuals”

The outcome of Hastings United’s campaign this season could well be determined this afternoon at the Pilot Field, where bottom and relegated side Corinthian Casuals are the visitors. Two nervous  Hastings performances have seen consecutive defeats against both Dover and Dartford by the odd goal in three, and there can be no more slip ups if a play off place is to be secured. On both occasions opponents have taken the game to Hastings, who have frozen on the day and have clearly been second best for both matches. Missing in these games have been the suspended Ade Olorunda and defender Sean Ray, and the honeymooning Jimmy Elford. Significantly Ray and Olorunda have scored over 22 goals for United between them and are key elements of recent success. Although Elford returns today both Ray and Olorunda are still missing which continues to be troubling.

Hastings supporters will be bringing both their pocket calculators and mobile phones this afternoon in an endeavour to stay on top of proceedings. Quite simply, victories both this Saturday and next, also against a relegated side Godalming Town could still secure the championship if Maidstone United and Tooting and Mitcham show an accommodating dip in form. In contrast a defeat today could bring an untimely end to those promotion dreams and a draw would see United sweating on their result and those of others next Saturday.

Today is no foregone conclusion as although relegated, Corinthian Casuals ran into form last week and won at Burgess Hill by four goals to one. Perhaps a banana skin is lurking around the corner!

Hastings United v Dartford - Saturday 14th April 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Dartford”

Promotion issues are still no clearer as United face their final three games of the season. They certainly missed a golden opportunity on Easter Monday when, following Maidstone United’s unexpected draw at home to Sittingbourne, they were blown away by a rampant Dover side in a one sided first half. A second half goal made the match appear closer at the finish than it was, but brought United’s impressive unbeaten run to an end. The heroics of goalkeeper Lee Worgan kept United in the game in a torrid opening spell, demonstrating the importance his presence brings to the side.

This afternoon Hastings will look to get back on the winning trail at home to Dartford. In recent weeks Dartford’s promotion hopes have faded, and the visitors must win this afternoon if they are to retain any realistic hope at all. It should therefore be an open entertaining game.

Today, Hastings will be without the suspended Ade Olorunda and Sean Ray and it is expected that John Bradley will start up front alongside Sam Adams. Whilst United will want to keep the pressure on leaders Maidstone United who now have a game in hand and a one point advantage, the more realistic objective is to fend off Tooting and Mitcham who are close to over hauling United for second spot.

Hastings United v Dover Athletic - Monday 9th April 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at Crabble, Dover where today Hastings United visit Dover Athletic”

Hastings conclude their Easter fixtures with a crucial visit to play off chasing Dover Athletic, and the promotion outcomes will certainly appear clearer by 5 o’clock tonight for both clubs. Saturday’s comfortable four goal win at home to Croydon Athletic took Hastings level on points with Maidstone United, although the Kent side had one game in hand. Earlier today, Maidstone United entertained Sittingbourne and they shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Pressure has been building on Dover Athletic as expectations are strong for this ambitious club, but their aspirations to snatch a play off place were dealt a blow on Saturday when they lost by a single goal at Fleet. Their need to win this afternoon is certainly greater than Hastings and I would look to United to play a spoiling defensive game and hope that the jitters begin to affect the home side. Certainly a draw would be considered a good outcome for the Sussex side but a win would take them top.

Lee Carey comes back into the reckoning after his two match ban, but still out is Sean Ray whose suspension continues to run. His towering presence and inspiration will be sorely missed at the heart of the Hastings defence. Up front on Saturday both Ade Olorunda and Sam Adams were in fine form but ominously Olorunda begins a two match suspension next week and misses the home matches against Dartford and Corinthian Casuals. Hastings may live to regret their lack of discipline which has the potential to disrupt these last four league games.

Hastings United v Croydon Athletic - Saturday 7th April 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Croydon Athletic”

Financially troubled Croydon Athletic are the next hurdle that Hastings need to overcome if they are to keep alive their championship hopes this afternoon at the Pilot Field, and on paper at least the problem may not be too challenging. Admittedly Hastings are still without the suspended Lee Carey and Sean Ray, and Jimmy Elford becomes an absentee for the next three games as he is getting married.

Maidstone’s surprise draw at Whyteleafe yesterday has left them just three points ahead of Hastings, having played the same number of games. Their lead has been whittled down as Hastings have maintained a consistent run of  fifteen games without defeat whilst Maidstone have struggled to win games which had seemed easy on paper. One advantage that Maidstone possess is their superior goal difference, which could prove telling in the final analysis. The mathematicians amongst the Hastings supporters will remind you that as Maidstone do not have a game today, Hastings could go top this afternoon, but they would need to rattle in fourteen goals at the Pilot Field. Let’s not hold our breath on that one.

Both Bernard Asante and John Bradley are available again, having missed last Saturday’s narrow victory at Horsham by the odd goal in three. It was substitute Graham Webb who snatched the all important winner in the last minute.

Outcomes will become clearer on Easter Monday, following a tough visit to promotion chasing Dover Athletic. United will want to ensure that they avoid defeat to protect their second spot, bearing in mind Tooting and Mitcham’s late run. If the championship is to elude them, Hastings will want to achieve second spot in order to guarantee home advantage in the play offs.

Horsham YMCA v Hastings United - Sat 31st March 2007

I’m Roger Sinden here at Gorings Mead, Horsham where today Hastings United visit Horsham YMCA”

It’s a depleted side that makes the crucial visit to Horsham YMCA as Hastings continue to press Maidstone United for top spot, and an automatic promotion place. Skipper Sean Ray is now suspended for the next five games as a result of an earlier dismissal away to Ashford and then last Saturday’s red card at home to Leatherhead. Ray’s dismissal was the turning point of that game as the home side were at that point winning by a single goal. Leatherhead finally snatched an equaliser in the last ten minutes and two valuable points were lost. Not only will the side miss Ray’s defensive capabilities but also his ability to grab goals, as evidenced by his eleven goals tally this season.

Also out of contention are the suspended Lee Carey and John Bradley and Bernard Asante, who have University commitments.

The week also saw leaders Maidstone United sink to a surprising home defeat to neighbours Chatham and the Kent side are only one point ahead of Hastings with a game in hand. Maidstone are at home again today, this time to Burgess Hill and neither United nor Maidstone have won in their last two games. With Dartford and Tooting and Mitcham coming up on the rails it would be foolish to take the eye off other challengers.

Once again Hastings know that they could theoretically top the division tonight if results go their way, which is reward enough for what should be a tough match against Sussex rivals.

Hastings United v Leatherhead - Saturday 24th March 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Leatherhead”

Hastings have seven remaining matches to the end of the campaign and, unless there is a dramatic change in fortunes, they  face the prospect of the lottery of the play offs. Although placed second in the Ryman South they are still two points adrift of consistent leaders Maidstone United, who significantly have also two games in hand. Maidstone show no signs of losing and grind out results week in, week out.

Hastings have experienced an extraordinary season and rarely can a team claim to have both topped their division, as they did briefly for one day two weeks ago, as well as having occupied bottom position as they did in the opening weeks of the season, when nothing went right.

With an undefeated run of thirteen games, and just one defeat in twenty three matches, Hastings can certainly claim to be one of the form sides of the division. Last week they put in a cautious jaded display at the Metropolitan Police and rarely looked like bettering their one all outcome, and in so doing lost further ground to Maidstone.

Inevitably manager Nigel Kane keeps faith with the same squad for the visit of eighth placed Leatherhead, who whilst a difficult side to beat have not won for five games. Encouragingly Maidstone United visit third placed Dulwich hamlet this afternoon, so if results went the right way both at the Pilot Field and Dulwich, there could be new league leaders tonight. But as I said before, it is a lottery.

Metropolitan Police v Hastings United - Saturday17th March 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at  Imber Court, Thames Ditton where today Hastings United visit  Metropolitan Police”

The last week saw Hastings United briefly rise to the top of the Ryman Division South after a battling mid week win away to Ashford, by the odd goal in five but Maidstone United’s goalless draw the following evening, was sufficient to return the Kent Club to the top on goal difference. Critically Maidstone still have two games in hand but at least mid week saw some ground made up.

Both clubs have tough fixtures on paper this afternoon, with Maidstone entertaining Horsham YMCA and Hastings making the journey to Metropolitan Police.

Their earlier visit to Imber Court last September in an FA Cup replay was a total disaster with the boys in blue winning by five goals to one. Metropolitan Police are still on the fringe of the play off places and therefore nothing can be taken for granted.

The Hastings squad is in good spirits being undefeated in twelve matches, and with three goals at both Ashford and Walton Casuals within the last week, the goals are certainly flowing. Just one cloud on the future horizon will be a suspension for influential captain Sean Ray following his dismissal at Ashford on Tuesday night.

Manager Nigel Kane keeps faith with the same squad which has served him well in what has been a superb run of only one defeat in twenty two games. It is just a matter of whether Maidstone or Hastings will have the stamina and good fortune to make it to the finishing post first.

Hastings United v Fleet Town - Saturday 10th March 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Fleet Town”

Hastings entertain promotion outsiders Fleet Town this afternoon with the knowledge that they could theoretically occupy top slot by tonight. They would need to collect maximum points from their Hampshire visitors at  the Pilot Field this afternoon and hope that Molesey defeat table topping Maidstone United. In the corresponding match at Fleet, Hastings ran out winners by three goals to two, so  they will also be looking to register another league double.

Last Saturday, for their visit to Walton Casuals, having welcomed back captain Sean Ray, Hastings finally shook off their first half lethargy with a stronger second half performance, and ran out winners by three goals to one. That leaves United undefeated in 10 starts and with only one defeat in 20 games. Supporters will be delving into the record books to determine if this is a record for United. Again there are no selection worries in terms of injuries and suspensions and Manager Nigel  Kane is expected to field essentially the same side which is performing so consistently week after week.

A characteristic feature before the start of each match is the sight of all of  Hastings side participating in a motivational hug in the centre of the pitch. This is certainly indicative of an amazing team spirit which has carried the team through a truly memorable season after such a problematic start.

Walton Casuals v Hastings United - Saturday 3rd March 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at Franklyn Road Sports Ground where today Hastings United visit Walton Casuals”

Hastings kick off their fixture at Walton today in their highest league position of the season, just two points off league leaders Maidstone United and three points ahead of the third placed club. Maidstone, with two matches in hand, remain firm championship favourites, but manager Nigel Kane still believes that they can be caught. Certainly the talk around the club has moved from being a possible play off contender to a more recent belief that the Championship is still a possibility. Hastings have stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches, with one defeat only in nineteen games.

Following last Saturday’s hard earned draw at Cray, in which a late goal by the home side snatched valuable points away, Hastings made heavy weather in beating Chatham by two goals to one at home.

More significantly these results were achieved without the suspended Sean Ray in both and Sam Adams in one, so it looks as though the potential banana skin whilst fielding a weakened side, has been avoided. Today selection is to be made from a fully available squad and with the team performing so well it virtually chooses itself.

Today leaders Maidstone are at home to high riding Dartford so Hastings supporters will be keen to hear of developments there as well as keeping an eye on progress at Franklyn Road.

Cray Wanderers v Hastings United - Saturday 24th February 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at Courage Stadium Bromley where today Hastings United visit Cray Wanderers”

Hastings enter the critical final stage of the season in good heart as a result of a run which has seen only one defeat in seventeen league matches. That one defeat was against leaders Maidstone United and they must represent the greatest threat to United’s promotion aspirations. The Kent club currently top the table with three more points than United as well as having a game in hand.

Hastings travel to Cray this afternoon without the suspended Sean Ray and Sam Adams in an endeavour to at least sustain their third position. It is likely that John Bradley will partner Ade Olorunda up front, in the absence of Sam Adams, and that Kevin Rose will slot in alongside Dan Williams in the Hastings defence. The last two matches have seen Hastings claw back a three goal deficit away at Dulwich Hamlet in a six goal thriller and then recover two goals against Sittingbourne last Saturday to win by five goals to two.

Whilst this never say die attitude is admirable, manager Nigel Kane must be worried that early defensive frailties gives the side so much to do in the later stages of the game. Not that the Hastings supporters are grumbling too much as the Houdini style escapes make for excellent entertainment.

Cray are without a win in five games and occupy a mid table position, but they did achieve a battling goalless draw recently against high riding Dartford in front of almost 1600 spectators so will provide a stern challenge this afternoon. Once again United will be looking to strong travelling support to urge them on.

Dulwich Hamlet v Hastings United - Saturday 10th February 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at Champion Hill Stadium where today Hastings United visit Dulwich Hamlet”

A trio of clubs sit one point below leaders Dover in the Ryman Division South before this afternoon’s matches. The second club Dulwich Hamlet, entertain fourth placed Hastings United, and with similar playing records it is only goal difference that is in the host’s favour prior to kick off. There can be little doubt that today’s match will have a critical influence on end of season positions. Only the champions are definitely promoted, with the other spot being contested through play off involving the next four sides

Unfortunately Ade Olorunda is unavailable through suspension this afternoon, a major blow as he has scored three goals from four starts. John Bradley partners Sam Adams up front this afternoon. There are also doubts about the fitness of Dan Williams. Danny Ellis stands by if he is not fit to make the starting line up.

Hastings have only tasted defeat once in fifteen matches, having won eleven and drawn three. This impressive run has seen United surge up the table to get to touching distance of Dover Athletic. It was however only recently that Dulwich were toppled from their top spot as they have suffered a recent dip in form. Last week Hastings saw off Molesey at the Pilot Field by two goals to nil, with Olorunda and Ray getting a goal in each half. The game was never inspiring but Hastings have this continuing knack of grinding out results in a consistent way.

Despite the adverse weather the game has survived although it is likely that the pitch will be very heavy. Hastings will look to some vociferous travelling support in the hope of helping them leave Champion Hill Stadium undefeated this afternoon.

Hastings United v Molesey - Saturday 3rd February 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Molesey”

Hastings last fixture against Molesey in November, when they lost by three goals to two, proved to be the turning point of their season. Since then they have gone fourteen matches with only one defeat, a run which has elevated them to fifth place, only three points behind leaders Dulwich Hamlet.

The last week has seen two valuable victories which has kept them in contention with the leaders and which has set up next week’s attractive fixture away to top of the table Dulwich Hamlet. Last week, captain Sean Ray celebrated his new contract with a brace of goals in a three one victory at home to Kingstonian. This was followed up mid week with a battling win against Sittingbourne by two goals to one. Russell Eldridge scored with a well struck free kick and Dan Williams grabbed the winner in the final seconds of the game.

The Hastings side continues to virtually select itself although Sam Adams is unlikely to make the starting line up because of a knee injury. He was named as substitute on Tuesday and it is possible that he will remain there for the start, with Ade Olorunda and John Bradley forming the United strike force. Lee Worgan, in the Hastings goal, deserves a mention as his arrival to the club has created the stability defensively which has contributed so much to the winning run.

Maidstone United v Hastings United - Saturday 13th January 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at Central Park Stadium, Sittingbourne where today Hastings United visit Maidstone United”

An early morning pitch inspection has given this game the go ahead, but don’t expect a perfect playing surface for this afternoon’s Ryman league encounter. Maidstone United currently ground share with Sittingbourne and the extra use of the playing surface has taken its toll, causing Maidstone to experience a back log of fixtures due to postponements. Maidstone aspire to return to play in the town, but resolution is still some time away.

Last week a battling performance by Hastings United at home to Tooting and Mitcham saw a further three points secured in a run which has seen seven wins and two draws in nine matches, taking the club to a handily placed fifth position in the league. Sam Adams scored the all important goal with goalkeeper Lee Worgan and defender Sean Ray outstanding in a tense encounter. Hastings have secured the services of Lee Worgan on contract to the end of the season, along with Lee Carey and Sam Adams, to ensure the necessary stability in their promotion push.

For today’s match Sean Ray is possibly  unavailable through injury, and with natural replacement Rhys Whyborne also injured, United would have to  look to Kevin Rose to play at the heart of the United defence if Ray is absent. Maidstone United defeated Hastings with some ease in the opening match of the season so things will be far from easy in this crucial match this afternoon.

Hastings United v Tooting & Mitcham - Saturday 6th January 2007

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Tooting and Mitcham”

Hastings will be keeping a nervous eye on the weather this afternoon in the hope that they can complete their home fixture against Tooting and Mitcham . Last week, hopes of staying in touch with the league leaders were washed away at the Homelands. Ashford raced into a two goal lead, only to be pegged back by Hastings just after the break, before the referee called a halt to proceedings after 56 minutes. It was not surprising as the weather by then had appeared to be signalling the end of the world with swirling winds and driving rain. A frustrating afternoon, made worse by the fact that cautions collected in an abandoned match still count.

The Pilot Field has been decidedly wet of late and with the weather forecast uncertain, a precautionary pitch inspection occurred mid morning.

As far as team news is concerned, Hastings welcome back Danny Ellis after his shoulder problem, but Rhys Whyborne has a hamstring injury and is replaced by Dan Williams. Tim Olorunda drops to the bench.

Tooting and Mitcham are having a disappointing season by their standards but include former Hastings goalkeeper Dave King in their line up. They also include former Hastings manager George Wakeling in their management team so there will be plenty of old scores to settle.

Corinthian Casuals v Hastings United - Saturday 23rd December 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at King George’s Field, Tolworth where today Hastings United visit Corinthian Casuals”

With five wins and a draw in the last six league outings Hastings United make the journey to Corinthian Casuals this afternoon with good Christmas spirit. The promising run has come at the right time both to kick start United’s season and also to prepare for the visit of championship favourites Dover to the Pilot Field on Boxing Day.

There is the matter of this afternoon’s fixture at  Corinthian Casuals this afternoon but on paper the league’s bottom club should not pose an insuperable problem, although inevitably manager Nigel Kane has warned against a too casual approach for what is a must win fixture this afternoon.

The cold dense foggy conditions that have gripped the South of England have lifted, and there was a fear up until this morning that the fixture may not take place.

Definitely out for Hastings this afternoon are Kevin Rose (who scored last week’s match winner at home to Godalming) and influential wide player Lee Carey, both of whom sit out one match suspensions. Also rated doubtful is captain Sean Ray whose knee injury kept him out of the side last Saturday.

Despite the absence of these key players United should have sufficient resources to at least achieve a draw this afternoon and to nicely set up Boxing Day’s cracker at home to Dover.

Hastings United v Godalming Town - Saturday 16th December 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Godalming Town”

A five match unbeaten league run involving four wins and a draw has given Hastings supporters ample reason to turn their backs on Christmas shopping and make their way to the Pilot Field this afternoon. Godalming Town, promoted to the Ryman League last season, having been Combined Counties League champions, make their first ever visit to the Pilot Field. They have adjusted well to the step up and are currently in a mid table position.

United have surged up the table as a result of their run of good form. Last Saturday Cray Wanderers and United shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw. It was an enthralling match which could have gone either way. Mid week Hastings comprehensively defeated Metropolitan Police by three clear goals, with captain Sean Ray registering twice from set pieces.

Although Bernard Asante is unavailable through thigh strain injury, Danny Ellis who fired in a memorable goal last Saturday, has recovered from a shoulder injury and has returned to the squad. If United can maintain their rich vein of form, the season will be nicely set up for a play off push.

Hastings United v Cray Wanderers - Saturday 9th December 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Cray Wanderers”

Hastings United entertain eighth placed Cray Wanderers this afternoon on a Pilot Field surface which is sure to be heavy, but which has thankfully survived the recent wet weather. There are three scheduled home matches in the next week and a consistent run could put United on the fringe of the play off places. Just a few weeks ago a string of poor results left United dangerously close to the foot of the table but three straight league wins have revived United’s fortunes.

Last Saturday’s league fixture away to Sittingbourne was called off but midweek, Hastings bowed out of the Sussex Senior Cup with a comprehensive four goal defeat to neighbours Eastbourne Borough. During that encounter, inform midfielder Tim Olorunda sustained a knee injury which will keep him sidelined for a few weeks. On the brighter side, midfielder Nima Cham is available again after injury and captain Sean Ray returns from suspension in what is sure to be a close encounter

Hopefully Hastings can maintain their goal scoring form in recent league games which has seen them score ten goals in three matches, and that Tuesday’s defeat with scarcely a goal chance all evening can be put firmly behind them.

Hastings United v Dulwich Hamlet - Saturday 25th November 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Dulwich Hamlet”

After a defeat by the odd goal in five away to Molesey, in which Hastings will consider themselves harshly done by to have conceded a penalty, they bounced back to winning ways with a win at Whyteleafe on Tuesday night. A last minute winner made up to a degree for the late goals that Hastings have conceded this season. The score of three goals to two, mirrored that of the previous Saturday but on this occasion it was United  this time who were fortunate to be awarded a penalty. They say that over a season these things all even themselves out.

This afternoon current Division One South leaders Dulwich Hamlet visit the Pilot Field with a record showing they are an attacking side and include top scorer Chris Dickson in their starting line up. Their recent playing record of six wins in their last seven matches speaks for itself and confirms they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Hastings would have liked to have  been  at full strength this afternoon, but this is far from the case as a result of illness, injury and suspension. Included in the list of unavailable players are Dan Williams,  Ambrose Kamara and Danny Ellis and there are doubts over John Bradley, so once again manager Nigel Kane has needed to raid the reserves to make up the numbers.

Supporters with an arts background will recall the visit of Hamlet’s ghost and a tale of haunting, fear, murder, deceit and betrayal. Hopefully supporters will remember the visit of Hamlet this afternoon for all the right reasons instead of these.

Kingstonian v Hastings United - Saturday 11th November 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at Kingsmeadow Stadium where today Hastings United visit Kingstonian”

A lively final few minutes last Saturday saw Burgess Hill take all three points from a needy Hastings United whose player unavailability through long term injury was exacerbated by the sending off of both Danny Ellis and Danny Williams. The prospect of suspension for both looms

Hastings had only sporadic chances to have won the game before that match  winning  late strike and must thank in form goalkeeper Lee Worgan for some magnificent second half saves to keep alive any chance of a result.

This week’s visit to eighth placed Kingstonian provides an opportunity to pull away from the foot of the table against a side that has gone four games without a win. Manager Nigel Kane makes two changes from last week and includes midfielder Nima Cham and striker John Bradley from the start. It is up front that Hastings have  struggled the most, not helped by injury to Ade Olorunda and the release of Marc Whiteman from the playing staff. Sam Adams has also struggled with injury but came on for part of the second half in the quest for goals. Ambrose Kamara is the most recent striker to have joined the club, but it would be harsh to judge him too quickly as he seeks to settle in a side that is not the most confident at present.

Let’s hope that whoever plays up front this afternoon will not just have to rely upon long ball service, and that Hastings endeavour to play a fluent passing game through midfield.

Hastings United v Burgess Hill - Saturday 4th November 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Burgess Hill”

Hastings manager Nigel Kane faces selection problems ahead of today’s Sussex derby against Burgess Hill. Burgess Hill have put together a useful run of seven games without defeat and now lie in 7th place in the Ryman Division One.

The options available to Hastings had already been narrowed with the release of striker Marc Whiteman and defender Matt Piper, both allegedly for football rather than financial reasons. Assistant Manager Ryan Light also parted company with the club last week because of work commitments.

On top of these departures has come of injuries to Sam Adams and Paul Ruddy, to add to longer term absentees Ade Olorunda and Russell Eldridge, with Nina Cham and John Bradley also being doubtful for today’s match

On the brighter side Hastings secured three valuable points at home to Whyteleafe on Tuesday night, with the solitary goal coming from Lee Carey in a match which saw the visitors reduced to ten men for much of the match.

It will be a real test of the quality of Reserve and fringe players as they seek to plug important gaps in the starting line up.

Burgess Hill? With the squad available today, Hastings would be happier playing Benny Hill.

Hastings United v Waltham Forest (FA Trophy) - Sat 21st Oct 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Waltham Forest”

After a blank Saturday last week Hastings had a midweek opportunity at Chatham to gather much needed league points. The appearance of Hastings new mascot Leonard the Seagull was unable to lift the side and they were soundly beaten by five goals to one. It is the second time this season that Hastings have been beaten by this score, whilst on their travels.

This afternoon Waltham Forest of Ryman Division One North are the visitors in the next round of the FA Trophy. Just two weeks ago, Hastings eliminated Croydon by 2 goals to 1 in another home tie in the same competition. On that occasion Marc Whiteman scored both goals and debutant goalkeeper Lee Worgan  impressed with a solid display.

Waltham Forest registered their first win of the season last Saturday, and like Hastings are having a mediocre season at the wrong end of the table. This is a must win match in the eyes of Hastings supporters who have been expressing disappointment of late about the club’s fortunes and inconsistency.

Certainly the prize money of £1350 will be much needed by the eventual winners of this tie.

Hastings United v Croydon Athletic (FA Trophy) - 7th Oct 2006

I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Croydon Athletic”

Hopes of a money spinning FA Cup run were cruelly dashed on Tuesday night when Hastings were eliminated in a replay at Metropolitan Police. It was not just the defeat that has hit the club so hard, it was also the margin of 5 goals to 1.

Having also  been knocked out of  the Ryman League Cup already and with a lowly league position there is a danger that the season will become meaningless.

However today does present an opportunity to make further progress in the FA Trophy when Croydon Athletic, also of the Ryman league are the visitors. This national knock out tournament for senior non league clubs also ends with a Wembley final, and there is prize money along the way for each round. Defeat today would be disastrous.

Manager Nigel Kane has now secured a permanent goalkeeper and drafts in Lee Worgan in this afternoon’s line up. Lee has seen Under 21 experience with Wales. He also hopes to include Steve Ringwood as replacement to the injured Russell Eldridge, whose crosses from the left have been sorely missed.

Croydon Athletic have already defeated Hastings by 3 goals to 2 in a league fixture on their ground and will be hopeful at least of forcing a replay.

Hastings United v Metropolitan Police (FA Cup) - 30th Sept 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Metropolitan Police”

Hastings attempt to overcome their third hurdle in this season’s FA Cup campaign when fellow Ryman League side Metropolitan Police call in for the second qualifying round. With prize money for this tie at £3,750 it is an important opportunity to continue to try to balance the Pilot Field coffers.

Last Saturday Hastings notched up their first home league win of the season when two goals from Sam Adams were the downfall of Walton Casuals. Influential winger Russell Eldridge left the pitch on a stretcher last week, having injured an ankle, so manager Nigel Kane will need to make changes to a side which appears to be running into form at just the right time. After a dismal start to the season Hastings have only lost once in seven matches, and with home advantage must fancy their chances to make further progress.

The Boys in Blue are hardly setting the league alight with their form either and are placed below Hastings with just one win in six starts. Former prolific striker Kevin Copper has returned to the club after a spell with Totting and Mitcham. The good news for Hastings is that he will not appear this afternoon, having previously represented Tooting in the same competition earlier this season.

Hopefully my post match report will confirm a Hastings victory and will be free of poor humour at the expense of the police, but I fear that neither can be guaranteed.

Hastings United v Walton Casuals - 23rd September 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Walton Casuals"

In a week of contrasting fortunes Hastings United have  made progress in the FA Cup with a well merited two goal victory away to Dartford last Saturday but came back to earth with a bump, when they tossed away league points at home to Horsham YMCA on Tuesday. With a two goal cushion in the final moments, they inexplicably conceded two goals through defensive frailties. The chance to record a first home league victory was thereby lost.

It has been at home that United have been most erratic and up to last Tuesday, had not registered a home league goal from earlier starts. Manager Nigel Kane expects his unchanged squad to lift themselves for this afternoon’s visit of Walton Casuals. Goalkeeping errors have been a feature of the opening of United’s season and work continues behind the scenes to bring in a replacement for Matt Bromby who left the club unexpectedly a week or so ago.

Hastings reward for FA Cup success is a home tie against Metropolitan Police next Saturday where the prize money is £3750 and an ideal preparation for that crucial game would be three points against Walton Casuals this afternoon.

Dartford v Hastings United (FA Cup) - 16th September 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Thurrock Hotel, Ship Lane, where today Hastings United visit Dartford”

Having successfully negotiated the hurdle of Merstham in the preliminary road of the FA Cup, Hastings return to the Thurrock Hotel, Ship Lane, temporary home of Dartford football club.

Last week Hastings secured their first league points of the season when they surprised an in form Dartford side and comfortably won by two goals to nil. The important goals came from Lee Creasey and Ade Olorunda.

It is unfortunate that the FA Cup brings together the two same sides, on the same ground, in consecutive weeks. Dartford who include two former Hastings players in their squad in Tommy Osborne and Steve Hafner, will have surely learnt how to adapt their game to Hastings tactics from last weeks defeat. There is always the danger that the niggling tension between the sides last week may spill over into today’s game. The prize money for this afternoon’s tie is £2,250, to add to the £1,000 from the previous round. Prize money in the tournament builds incrementally in each round and represents an important opportunity for non league sides to balance their books and perhaps even to move into profitability.

Hastings manager Nigel Kane is likely to keep faith with goalkeeper Will Toal following the departure of Matt Bromby. Matt had made some key errors in recent matches which had begun to shake his confidence. I do not anticipate much change from the squad which won here last week and which adopted a 4-4-2 formation.

If scores are level this afternoon its back to the Pilot Field on Tuesday night for a replay, but hopefully it will not come to that.

Croydon Athletic v Hastings United - 26th August 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Keith Tuckey Stadium where today Hastings United visit Croydon Athletic”.

Having made a faltering start to the new season with no goals or points in their opening two fixtures, Hastings add two new faces to the squad which travels to Croydon Athletic this afternoon.

Striker Marc Whiteman made three appearances for Hastings on loan last season and has now rejoined the club along with midfielder Lee Carey from Bognor Regis Town. Both players have been used to playing in a higher standard of football so great things are expected of them this afternoon.

Those two opening fixtures were against Maidstone United and Tooting and Mitcham, arguably both amongst the stronger clubs in the division. Both fixtures demonstrated the current gap in quality between the best and the rest which is something that will need to be quickly rectified at Croydon this afternoon. Hastings are currently relying overly on the direct approach to goal, with long balls for the front runners to chase and hopefully today’s changes will inject both a little more guile in midfield as well as more striking power up front.
Although the last seven days have been disappointing the position is by no means terminal, so lets hope for brighter news this afternoon.

Hastings United v Maidstone United - 19th August 2006

“I’m Roger Sinden here at the Pilot Field where today Hastings United entertain Maidstone United”

Hastings United’s Ryman Division One campaign kicks off with a fixture against league new boys Maidstone United which has the potential of being one of the most attractive of the season .A bumper crowd is expected to reflect that.

The former Maidstone United were once a football league club and the former Hastings United enjoyed some memorable tussles against them. Since being reformed in 1992, the Stones have moved upwards through the football pyramid and were promoted as Champions from the Kent League last season. They are managed by Lloyd Hume, a former Hastings Town player and include former United favourite Nick Hegley in their squad.

Hastings Manager Nigel Kane has been able to retain most of last season’s squad and has also added to his options. Supporters were sorry to lose goalkeeper Chris May to Ramsgate but Matt  Bromby has been added to cover that position.

Today’s likely line up also includes new signings Adam Mountford and Dean Smith in midfield . The goal scoring duo is likely to be Ade Olorunda and John Bradley, with Sean Adams playing a little deeper.

The definition of “Optimism” is that emotion felt by every football supporter up and down the country. We will learn, just before 5pm, if that is to be justified in Hastings.
