Horsham v Hastings United - Saturday 26th March 2011

Pre Match Report

I’m Roger Sinden here at Gorings Mead, Horsham where Hastings United visit Horsham

Rapidly improving Hastings United face Sussex and relegation rivals Horsham this afternoon knowing that the result today will be a major factor in determining the outcome of their troubled season. Horsham are just one point ahead of United, from the same number of games, with an inferior goal difference so United cannot afford to lose this afternoon in what will surely be a tense encounter.

Last Saturday Hastings defeated Croydon Athletic by 3-1 at the Pilot Field with Sam Adams scoring two penalties along with a  headed goal from Sean Ray. Those three points put some daylight between United and the bottom four and set them up in good heart for the visit of Kingstonian midweek. A George Porter goal meant that Hastings were on course for another win but two late goals to the Ks meant that United lost 2-1. To cap it all there was  a blatant claim for a penalty towards the end overruled by the referee to the anger of the fans.

Playing for Horsham against their former club are Jamie Cade and Anthony Storey whilst Hastings Russell Eldridge and Lee Carey have previously represented Horsham, giving the match an additional edge.

Match Report

Horsham  ( 1 ) Hastings United ( 1 )

It was honours even at Gorings Mead this afternoon in this Sussex relegation derby and neither side are yet in a position to guarantee their Premier Division status. Horsham’s pitch was undulating and dry and was not conducive to free flowing football. The opening minutes were nervy and Horsham quickly took the lead in 12 minutes. Jamie Cade put the ball over the defence and Paul Ashley Robinson ran on to deftly flick the ball over the advancing Barton from the edge of then penalty area. Just before the break Horsham might well have added a second when Ben Andrews headed powerfully from a corner only to see Barton save by the post.

Hastings introduced Kenny Pogue after the break and enjoyed their best period in the game. Sustained pressure  then saw Pogue outpace the defence but he shot tamely at goalkeeper Zawadski. On 65 minutes Andrews was penalised for handball, resulting in a caution and then unwise comments to the referee’s assistant led to a second caution and dismissal.  Horsham decided to defend in depth and concede the imitative.

After sustained pressure Hastings equalised. Ollie Rowe scored his third goal in six matches when he headed Ross Sutton’s cross home and decent chances fell to both Pogue and Hopkinson as Hastings pushed for all three points.

Nevertheless, Hastings will be content with a valuable point in the final run in.
